"The freaks'll stay together, they're a tight old crew
You'll look at them, and they look at you
I love the ballyhoo girl but she don't care
It's hard to find love anywhere." - Mark Knopfler,
Devil BabyYes, Gentle Viewer, they look, and what they see ain't pretty...
I have a book from the UK, it tells the story of a troupe of Carnies rolling around the hills and ways of merry old England. I love those kinds of stories. Carnies are unique people. When I lived in Miami they would come every year to put on our Youth Fair. Over the years we got to know some of the repeat visitors.
ReplyDeleteVery Kewl... That would be an interesting job for a summer.

Nice composition on quite a few of those. Very nice.
ReplyDeleterylosag sent me my first spam. :)
ReplyDeleteI got that from her/him, too, and also deleted it!
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to post a comment since you were so kind as to post something for me. Great work especially with this essay! I really enjoy looking through all the photographs on your site.
ReplyDeletevery cute photo!!!
ReplyDeletecarnies? hahaha!!!
Which one are you?
ReplyDeleteI'm not in this photo for 2 reasons:
ReplyDelete1) There are 2 sides to a camera and I'm certain which side I belong on.
2) I never assembled the Sea Dragon so I wasn't worthy.
well, i started comenting individually on the photos, but i'll just say here that you captured a number of things:
ReplyDeletethe beauty of those brash & gaudy fairgrounds on a brilliant sunny day
an intimacy in the portraits
loved the tats & piercings: so clearly a mainstay of the culture
nice work overall with a high percentage of really strong images
Thanks, neene! Yeah, I was pretty pleased with most of the photos. It's hard to take an uninteresting or bland looking photo in that environment so I sort of felt like it was cheating. I'll be posting more later than have less to do with the Carnies just because they are so visually...ummm...visual. Just nice to look at. So I'm proud of them.
ReplyDeleteThese guys were so far from my experience with the tattoos and piercings, hard work, and vagabond lifestyle that I was just fascinated, not so much by them but that they sort of took an interest in SHOWING *ME* things.
It was an honor.
Nice, I know a number of people in these photo's, thanks, now I'm itching for the road again. if you want to trade links I'll put you on my Diary of a Carny site Blog.
