Photographer Justin Russell

Something about this is looking too easy and comfortable here. I'm looking and looking and it dawned on me, I USE THE OTHER EYE WHEN LOOKING THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER. I get nose smudges on the LCD and have a blind eye staring into the back of my camera. WTF? This is SUCH a easy fix! God GAVE me TWO eyes.

So I tried it all afternoon.

I couldn't do it.

Do eyes have a dominance like hands?

Jenny, The Thing of the Moment's Science Editor provides the answer in the comments.

In fairness to Justin since I CLEARLY snuck this...he got me here and here.

  1. according to wiki. . .

"Ocular Dominance, sometimes called eye dominance or eyedness, is the tendency to prefer visual input from one eye to the other[2]. It is somewhat analogous to the laterality of right or left handedness; however, the side of the dominant eye and the dominant hand do not always match. This is due to the fact that both hemispheres control both eyes, but each one takes charge of a different half of the field of vision, and therefore a different half of both retinas. There is thus no direct analogy between "handedness" and "eyedness" as lateral phenomena.

Approximately two-thirds of the population is right-eye dominant; however, neither eye is dominant in a small portion of the population. Dominance does appear to change depending upon direction of gaze due to image size changes on the retinas. There also appears to be a higher prevalence of left-eye dominance in those with Williams-Beuren syndrome, and possibly in migraine sufferers as well. Eye dominance has been categorized as "weak" or "strong"; highly profound cases are sometimes caused by amblyopia.

In those with anisometropic myopia (i.e. different amounts of nearsightedness between the two eyes), the dominant eye has been found to be the one with more myopia"

Does that response prove my dorkieness???

  2. That's from JIK, The Thing of the Moment's Science Editor.

It's proves your dorkiness but also comforts me to know I don't need to take my eyes in for an alignment.

Yeah..the eye I prefer is the weaker eye. I just checked my prescription. Why do I even NEED the other eye then? That's it. I'm getting a Pirate Patch.

  3. Wow... that was a lot more information than I ever knew.

And shame shame for being all stealth-like and taking my picture without my knowledge. I guess that's what I get for standing right next to you.

    But just for that...

    Look who I saw!

    *evil laugh* (maybe?)
