Another Day Under The Great Circle Route.

Planes flying between Europe and the US East Coast do not head out east over the Atlantic, rather, they fly northeast along the coast, over Maine, along Nova Scotia, past Newfoundland, Iceland and then they turn south into Europe. It seems counter intuitive until you put a string on a globe between major cities and watch it slide much further north than you'd think.

Because of this, Bangor gets in the news every now and then when some drunk disrupts a flight or Cat Stevens ends up on a no fly list.

  1. Yeah, isn't that wild? We always have jet contrails but when I saw this I was like WTF? I don't know if it was just a lack up wind in the upper atmosphere keeping them together or what but you don't usually see them like this. Hence the picture.

  3. This is your 3rd warning. Your .000002 degrees of a Circle is nice but you walk the fine line too often.

  9. I happen to like this picture a lot AND I think the "meme monitor" was missing the entire point of this image! Very cool shot, and very cool interpretation of the theme. Straight is not always straight...
