Small Magpie Moth

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! No more calls, please!

Gentle Viewer and budding Entymologist Daniel Llavaneras of Caracas, Venezuela accepted the challenge and submitted a photo of our mystery moth to a website and found out what it was.

*drum roll*

The common name of the moth is Small Magpie
Tha scientific name is Eurrhypara hortulata

Complete taxonomic classification:
Phylum Arthropoda
Superclass Hexapoda
Class Insecta
Subclass Pterygota
Order Lepidoptera
Family Pyralidae
Subfamily Pyraustinae
Genus Eurrhypara
Species hortulata

BIG thanks to Jim McClarin from Nashua, New Hampshire USA and
bugguide.net for helping with the identification.

If you read Spanish or even just want to check out his blog, it can be found here.

What it was doing in my BATHROOM is a question I'll leave for another time.

Muchas Gracias, Daniel!

  1. That guy is a long way from home, but then, you must have had something to attract him in, as Magpies love bright shiny things to collect!

Neat capture, on all accounts. ;-)
