  2. Seen this posted before and didn't comment then. Some days, I just don't feel like sayin' anything.

But today - I comment. WOW. How did you get this one? Was it luck? Were you shooting multiple frames in hope to catch something?

How is it that the lightning bolt is in focus, but the light to the left (church steeple?) and the lights to the right (town/city?) aren't in focus?

As you know I am a very amateur photoblogger and would really like to understand...............

Fun and interesting all at the same time. Well blogged.

  3. Owen: Yeah, I didn't realize it at the time because it was one of the first times I tried taking lightning shots. I was really lucky with this and another one right after. I got lightning on 2 of 3 attampts and quit to look at them on my computer. (This is another of the Photos from my Apartment® series. Heh heh) I didn't realize that MANY time when you try to take there are CLOUDS between you and most lightning bolts.

    Wrath: I IS!

    zbjernak: Skill, Bro. Skill. ;)

SPK: Ok, but don't tell anyone. Taking shot like this is more like trapping lightning than shooting it. I just set my camera to min aperture of F 8.0 and the shutter speed for as long as I could which was 16 secs. And then just waited. The blur is because I didn't have by tripod or that little beanbag pod thing so I was just hand holding it on the bottom window sill and moved a little. The lightning however, was STILL just a fraction of a second. So it is unblurred. I have no idea how you'd do it during the day unless you could set an aperture of say..f22 and us a ND filter. My friend Mean Don got a day shot the old fashioned way (dumb luck) with a disposable point and shoot but the lightning bolt was difficult to make out against the day sky.

  4. i think your answer to SPK left out just a weeeeeeeee detail: you forgot to mention tying a key to the tail of a kite, and flying it AFTER having set up your camera in the manner you described above.
