The Captain Henry Lee/Swan's Island Ferry - Frenchboro Run.

See? I paid for my ticket. No graft here, Gentle Viewers. The Thing of the Moment - Certified 100% Graft Free. You can count on it. Until the first bit of graft is offered anyway. (Well bitten thumbnail strategically hidden by request)

300 years ago the islands were settled by people who did not check with the agent on the advisability of taking their cars over on a 'day' trip. The cars have long rusted away but their names live on in the island cemetaries and in the families still living there.

A fellow ferry and Canon Powershot S2 enthusiast. (Ok, she was sort of ambivalent about both)

The Lido Deck.

Attention Gentle Viewers Tom W and SPK: If you haven't done this, and like anything else cool in Maine you probably have, but it's ONLY 8 BUCKS!! The same sort of trip would cost you 50 out of Bar Harbor. AND I AM TALKING DEER ON THE FREAKING BEACH, BROS! You won't see deer on those stupid Porcupine Islands.

Far more photos than you could ever want of the Captain Henry Lee/Swan's Island Ferry Frenchboro run can be seen here.

  1. Ah, yes. We have done Frenchboro, Swans Island, Islesboro & Vinalhaven. Not Matinicus tho' (note: that is $26.00 Adult RT). Also, the RT rate for cars to Frenchboro is $24 (to Matinicus it is $70!). We've also done boats to Monhegan (from both Boothbay Harbor & Port Clyde), Baker Island (highly recommended), Islesford & Cranberry Islands. Also, have not done Isle Au Haut or Bear Island. Yet....

Wonder how deer got out there in first place. I read a story 2 weeks ago about 2 fishermen who found a deer a half mile off the British coast (see http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1094215). It was young and scared. Somehow they hauled it in to their small boat and actually sat on it until returning to land, and let it go free. Deer are pretty good swimmers, but that was not normal.

Great photos, jk. Can't wait to be back up there again.

  2. I've got eagle eyes and really spotted the fly on the ear of the deer!

And now it's time for my appointment with my shrink, again *sigh*

Great story, great pictures I want a holiday right NOW!

    Lots of greetings from Holland

  3. Greetings all,
The deer got onto the island most likely during the winter when the seas in that area freeze over. That or maybe the indians that use to live on the island brought them over to populate the island and would then have a ready food source available to them
