Hmmm...JKirlin will do a lot to get a photo; pester carnies, sneak up on large spiders without screaming, and scare the legs off a starfish, but ignoring a "do not trespass" sign on a deserted pier, I think not. I'm guessing zoom lens here considering the relative size of the boats in the background.
Is that the view of Southwest Harbor from the end of Main Street where that super ritzy condominium was built with the private dock that obscures the beautiful view of the harbor and surrounding hills? If it is, it definitely is an example of the New Maine where money talks more than keeping previously picturesque views unobscured for the benefit of the general public.
jm: My scaling days are behind me. Shade is right, I just zoomed over it.
Shade: Yer right, I just zoomed over it.
min: Me, too.
Tom W. *ding ding ding* We have a winnerrrrr! No more calls, please. Tom W is apparently a local boy because he correctly identified the exact pier. Nice work. This was made tougher by the fact that identical piers are being built all over the 99% privately held ocean front property in Maine. Of course, if you don't mind getting your feet muddy, you MAY walk below the mean high tide zone for falconry and other such pursuits.
Thanks for the complement, but I'm from "away" (Albany, NY). My wife and I have camped at Bass Harbor CG for 2-3 weeks most every summer since 1980. So, we have gotten to know Downeast Maine, and Mount Desert Island in particular, quite well. To the point where I can remember places quite vividly from memory.
The old Maine - new Maine thing has stuck in my craw for a long time. You don't know what you got till you lose it. There have been too many places in coastal Maine that have been ruined by overdevelopment, to the point where access for the general public to certain spots is eliminated. Not a good thing!
Two spots on MDI in particular upset me. That monstrosity of an excuse for a mansion on Schooner Head, and the elimination of the only spot to take pictures of Somes Sound from the north end (again, by an ugly mansion). Before any more of Maine is ruined forever, I hope the residents wake up and stop this desecration.
So what did you do? Scale the barrier? They look like the same pier.

ReplyDeleteI like this one better.

Tom W! We've spoken before months ago! A Gentle Viewer returns. I'll post the Cliffside McMansion for your loathing pleasure.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeff... this is the dock I commented on before...
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Tree will be placed at the end of the pier sometime in December. It was pictured in the Bar Harbor times a few years ago...
Great shots - keep them coming!
P.S. The condos behind you are my in-laws.
Heh heh...
ReplyDeleteLesson of the day...before you start mocking people make sure they are not in-laws of one of your favorite Gentle Viewers.
