Another Day Under The Great Circle Route.


Planes flying between Europe and the US East Coast do not head out east over the Atlantic, rather, they fly northeast along the coast, over Maine, along Nova Scotia, past Newfoundland, Iceland and then they turn south into Europe. It seems counter intuitive until you put a string on a globe between major cities and watch it slide much further north than you'd think.

Because of this, Bangor gets in the news every now and then when some drunk disrupts a flight or Cat Stevens ends up on a no fly list.
